I can’t think of Joe Leone without smiling. He was my buddy, my friend and like a brother to me for 26 years. We met at Monmouth or Washington Crossing, but didn’t talk a lot until Fort Mifflin.   Fort Mifflin was his Favorite event, and we always made as many as we could.

But this isn’t just about my friendship with Joe, but with everyone in the 5th PA who knew Joe and what a great sense of humor he had.

Some stories about Joe come to mind that I want to share with you:

We were at Germantown one year and at the end near the mansion they have us all lined up and they give the speech thanking us all. We always give a Hip Hip Huzzah, but Pete white decided to jump the gun and yelled “Hip”, it was quiet and everyone looked at him. You had to have seen Joe, he was trying so hard not to laugh he turned red and you thought he was going to explode.

At another Germantown, Joe was up by the bushes near the mansion all alone. I went and stood by him and we decided to make a last stand together and jump out and fire at Lance Peterson’s group. We jumped out and the muskets went- click, click. A few seconds later they fired. As they walked past, it was hard not to laugh at all the comments that were made.

There are a million more Joe stories, but these are just a few to give you who didn’t know him an idea what a great sense of humor he had, and good memories for those who knew him. I know he is watching us, and will always be with us.
