Did you know…..
•That Benedict Arnold served as an apprentice in his cousin’s Daniel and Joshua’s Lathrop’s successful Apothecary business?
•That Philadelphia is Greek for brotherly love?
•That the Battle of Springfield, June 23rd, 1780 was the last large action in the north?

•That many sea battles were fought in New Jersey ocean waters?
•That in an attempt to open the route to Washington in the Watchung Mountains in July of 1780, The British attacked the Americans around Springfield twice, the 2nd being one of larger, but least mentioned battles of the war?

Letter from the Editor

By RA Cunningham Hello 5th PA,

Hope this Newsletter finds you all well. We are in our final quarter of the year with still more reenactments to come.
We a great turnout at the battle of Brandywine. It was very hot and humid and a few soldiers, myself included did not make it through the whole Battle. As I left the battlefield, I fell behind a cannon crew to get out of the way of the battle. After the battle moved out the cannon crew then moved out. I found myself behind enemy lines behind a British cannon crew. Luckily I was in small clothes. When a lull in the action came, I ran off the field.

I came up to the PA Navy and they took great care of me. I was grateful for the cold water and rags. So you can say it is a battle of Brandywine that I will not forget.

Hope to see more of you before the year end Yours faithfully,
Rose (aka Roswell)

Battle of Germantown

At the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces in Pennsylvania defeated the American Continental Army under General George Washington. After capturing Philadelphia in September 1777, British General William Howe camped a large contingent of his troops at nearby Germantown, Washington launched a surprise attack on the poorly defended British camp, but his army failed to pull off his complex battle plan. The British drove away the Americans, inflicting twice as many casualties as they suffered. However despite the losses at Germantown and Brandywine, many of his soldiers had performed well and Germantown demonstrated that Washington’ once unskilled army was on its to becoming the well trained force that would win the war.
